Family Therapy

For the families trying — even when it's hard.

Every Voice Matters, Every Person Counts

Family of four standing among Christmas trees outdoors on a cloudy day. The child is sitting on the father's shoulders, and everyone is smiling.

If you're looking into family therapy, things at home are probably pretty hard right now.

Maybe there's a conflict that keeps coming up and nobody knows how to stop it. Maybe someone in the family is going through something, and everyone else is feeling it too. Maybe you're dealing with a big change — a divorce, a loss, a new family dynamic — and you just need some help getting through it together.

Whatever's going on, family therapy is a good place to start.

At Ripple Effects, we work with families of all kinds. Before anything else, your therapist will take time to actually get to know your family — who everyone is, what's been happening, what you're hoping for. Then you'll work together on what matters most, at a pace that makes sense for everyone in the room.

We see families in person at our Los Alamitos office, and we offer telehealth too if that's easier to make work.

What is Family Therapy?

The Basics

Four people sitting in a room having a conversation. An older man in an orange shirt on a red couch, a woman in a blue patterned top leaning on the couch, and a woman in a white sleeveless shirt leaning on the floor.

Family therapy isn't about figuring out who's right. It's about helping everyone feel heard — and finding a way forward together.

A therapist works with your family as a group, helping you communicate better, work through conflict, and build something stronger. Sessions are 75 minutes, which gives everyone enough time to actually get somewhere. And everyone gets a voice — including the quieter ones.

The fact that you're here means something.

What We Actually Do In Session

Approaches

Every family is different, so our therapists don't use a one-size-fits-all method. They draw from a range of approaches depending on what your family is working through:

  • Family Systems Therapy — looks at how each person's role and behavior affects everyone else

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) — helps family members connect on a deeper emotional level

  • Attachment-Based Therapy — explores how early relationships shape the way people relate to each other now

  • Trauma-Informed Care — for families dealing with loss, major stressors, or difficult histories

  • Narrative Therapy — helps families rethink the stories they've built about each other over time

Is Family Therapy Right For You?

Family therapy might be a good fit if:

  • There's a conflict that keeps coming up and never really gets resolved

  • A child or teen is struggling, and the whole family is feeling it

  • You're going through something big — a divorce, a remarriage, a loss, a major life change

  • Communication breaks down even when everyone is genuinely trying

  • Blended family dynamics are causing friction

  • Things are okay right now, but you'd rather deal with something before it gets harder

And it doesn't have to be a crisis. Some families come in just to get better at the things that are already a little hard — before they get harder.

  • Experience working with families at every stage and in every configuration

  • Every family member gets a voice — not just the adults

  • Our therapists don't work in isolation. There's supervision and support behind every session

  • Same-week appoinments are available

  • We'll match you with the right therapist before your first session

  • In-person sessions in Los Alamitos. Telehealth available throughout California

  • We accept insurance and offer sliding-scale fees. See our Fees and Insurance page

The Process

What to Expect

Step 1

A short call to see if we're a good fit — no pressure, no commitment.

Step 2

Your First Session
